What a family office is

A family office manages the wealth of one family. It invests, plans taxes and looks after the estate, all in one place.

A multi family office does the same work for several families. It shares the cost of the team between them.

Business families often set one up. So do founders who have sold a company.

Startups are one part of what they invest in. Listed shares, property and debt sit beside them.

How family offices tend to invest

  • They invest the family’s own money. There is no outside fund to report to.
  • So they can be patient. A family can hold a stake for many years.
  • Some write cheques to startups directly. Others back VC funds instead.
  • Some prefer sectors close to the family’s own business.
  • A few people make the call. A warm introduction carries weight.
  • Each office sets its own stage, sector and cheque size.

Before you write to one

  • Read what the office has backed before.
  • Say plainly why your startup fits the family.
  • Keep the first email short. Send a deck that reads well on a phone.
  • Expect questions on governance and on how you will use the money.
