How it works
- Post-money is pre-money plus the raise.
- Pre-money is post-money minus the raise.
- The stake new investors get is the raise divided by post-money.
- Holders before the round keep the rest, in the same proportions.
- From a raise and a stake: post-money is the raise divided by the stake.
- VC method: post-money is the exit value divided by the target multiple.
- If later rounds will dilute the investor, cut the exit value by that share first.
- Pre-money is that post-money minus the raise.
Questions founders ask
What is pre-money valuation?
It is what your company is worth just before new money comes in. Post-money is pre-money plus the raise.
How do I work out dilution from a raise?
Divide the raise by the post-money valuation. That is the stake new investors get. Everyone before the round shrinks by that share.
What is the VC method of valuation?
Start from the value you expect at exit. Divide it by the return the investor wants. That gives post-money today. Take away the raise for pre-money.
Does this calculator use outside figures?
